Robert Miller
(1989-2000)

Since becoming Director of the Columbia Concert Band in 1989 and founding its Jazz Ensemble, Robert Miller helped these units grow in numbers and proficiency.  Mr. Miller 'retired' from the band in Fall 2000.

Like many of us, Robert Miller became seriously interested in music as a teenager. Having prepared for a career as a music teacher with double Bachelor's degrees (Psychology and Music Education) and a Master of Musical Education degree at the University of Maryland, Mr. Miller's teaching experience has included Prince George’s County schools, Howard County schools, and Howard Community College.  He also gives private lessons at music stores and at his residence in Columbia.   Mr. Miller has been a Band and Percussion Adjudicator at festivals in Prince George’s, Howard, Harford and Baltimore Counties and an Adjudicator for Maryland All-State Junior and Senior High Band Auditions.

At the present time, Robert Miller is Band Director at Hammond Middle School, Applied Percussion Instructor at Howard Community College in addition to his private teaching and performing schedule.

Mr. Miller has been an advocate for musical education of both young people and adults and has encouraged the Columbia Concert Band organization to commission new music for wind bands.  Alfred Publishing Company of Van Nuys, California has issued one commissioned composition, Columbia Vision  (Fanfare and Processional), by Dave Black, (dedicated to the city of Columbia, MD on its 30th birthday).
