E-Mail Notes
(Things you didn't know or even care about e-mail)

Definitions (see Wikipedia)
bulletElectronic mail, abbreviated e-mail or email, is a method of composing, sending, and receiving messages over electronic communication systems. For additional information see the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail
bullet MIME - Short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, a specification for formatting non-ASCII messages so that they can be sent over the Internet. Many e-mail clients now support MIME, which enables them to send and receive graphics, audio, and video files via the Internet mail system. In addition, MIME supports messages in character sets other than ASCII.
bullet RTF - The Rich Text Format is a document file format that has been continually developed by Microsoft since 1987 for cross-platform document interchange. Most word processors are able to read and write RTF documents. Unlike most of the word processing formats, RTF is human-readable.
bulletE-mail filtering is the processing of electronic mail to organize it according to specified criterion. Most often this refers to the automatic processing of incoming messages.  E-mail filtering has several benefits and criticisms. For incoming mail, filtering is performed to:
bulleteliminate the sending and receipt of unsolicited emails and computer viruses.
bulletmove e-mails for efficient access
bullet automatically reply to emails, notifying the sender that their message has been received successfully. Common autoresponders are the out of office reply and vacation message.
bulletE-mail attachment (or email attachment) is a file which is sent along with an e-mail message. In MIME, the standard format of e-mail messages, attaching a file to a message is accomplished by encoding both the original message and the file to be attached in a multipart message.
bulletElectronic mailing lists (such as yahoogroups) are a special usage of e-mail that allows for widespread distribution of information to many Internet users. Software is installed on a computer which processes incoming email messages, and, depending on their content, either acts on them internally or distributes the message to all users subscribed to the mailing list.
bulletGIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap image format that is widely used on the World Wide Web, both for still images and for animations. The format was introduced in 1987 by CompuServe in order to provide a color image format for their file downloading areas, replacing their earlier RLE format which was black and white only.
bulletJPEG is a commonly used standard method of compressing photographic images. The most common file extensions for this format are .jpeg, .jfif, .jpg, .JPG, or .JPE although .jpg is the most common on all platforms. The name stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
bulletHTML - In computing, HyperText Markup Language is a markup language designed for the creation of web pages and other information viewable in a browser. HTML is used to structure information -- denoting certain text as headings, paragraphs, lists and so on -- and can be used to define the semantics of a document.
