CONTACT: Columbia Concert Band Winter Concert Columbia, Maryland, December 10th, 2006 — The Columbia Concert Band will return to their normal venue in Clarksville, MD to perform their annual Winter Concert this December. A variety of musical moods will be represented, from Eric Whitacre’s sublime Lux Aurumque to an exciting, contemporary version of the traditional “In Dulce Jubilo”, called A Jubilant Holiday, by Sean O’Loughlin. Maestro Michael Blackman has also programmed Mike Story’s arrangement of music from the feel-good movie The Polar Express (Glenn Ballard & Alan Silverstri), plus some original works written for concert band: Stars, by Jay Dawson and Cajun Folk Songs, by Frank Ticheli. More traditional pieces round out the concert program, including Leroy Anderson’s ever-popular Christmas Festival. Admission is free and no tickets are required. The concert is on Sunday, December 17th, at 3:00 p.m. at River Hill High School, 12101 Route 108, in Clarksville, MD. This concert is possible, in part, thanks to the Howard County Arts Council through a grant from the Howard County Government. The Columbia Concert Band is a non-profit community band that has been performing for local communities since 1983. The band’s purpose is to give non- professional musicians the opportunity to perform challenging band literature while entertaining the public in the Baltimore and Washington regional areas. The band is affiliated with Howard Community College, which gives credit to students for band participation.

On behalf of the entire Columbia Concert Band, I
hope that you are enjoying a calm and peaceful
holiday season. I also hope that you will allow us to
be part of your festivities by coming out to our FREE
Winter Concert. This formal performance will include
a mix of "winter" music and original symphonic band
repertoire. Setting a seasonal mood will be a medley
from "The Polar Express," a brilliant set of variations
on 'In Dulci Jubilo' entitled "Jubilant Holiday," and
Leroy Anderson's classic, "Christmas Festival." The
remainder of the program includes a march by Henry
Filmore, Frank Ticheli's highly rhythmic "Cajun Folk
Songs," a hauntingly beautiful piece by Eric Whitacre
entitled "Lux Arumque" ("Light and Gold"), Douglas
Akey's "Chorale and Celebration," and a very
interesting piece called "Stars," by Jay Dawson. I
must say that the Band is playing extremely well, and
expects to give one of the finest performances in our
history. Please remember that this concert is free
and that we will also be providing refreshments for
YOU, our audience, during the intermission.
When the CCB reconvenes in January of 2007, we will begin work on the most challenging set of music that I have programmed in my tenure as director. The program will include some music that I have always wanted to play with this wonderful band, and I am truly looking forward to it. Selections will include David Holsinger's "Nilesdance," Ron Nelson's "Courtly Airs and Dances," an unusual new work entitled "Unraveling," Jay Chattaway's "Mazama," and one of my favorite pieces of all time, Percy Grainger's "Scotch Strathspey and Reel." Wish us luck, and come on out in May to see how we've done! Thank you for your interest and support. You make it possible for us to give back to the community with our music, and that feels good. Please do join us (and bring your family and friends) at as many performances as you can - we promise to make them all as enjoyable and musical as possible! "See you at the double bar..." |
