James Houlik, Tenor Saxophone Virtuoso, to Give Master Class and Clinic

Columbia, Maryland, May 11, 2004 — James Houlik, Professor of Saxophone and Chair of Woodwinds at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and preeminent tenor saxophonist, will conduct a master class and saxophone clinic on the weekend of June 5th and 6th at Atholton High School.  Admission is free to both events, which will be in the choral room of Atholton, located at 6520 Freetown Road in Columbia, Maryland.  These events are sponsored by Columbia Concert Band, Music & Arts Center, and Conn-Selmer, Inc.

The master class will be on Saturday, June 5th from 12:30-3:00 p.m.  Participation is by invitation only, but all musicians are highly encouraged to attend and observe.  The clinic will be on Sunday, June 6th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and area musicians of all ages and ability levels are invited to bring their instrument and participate.  Immediately following the clinic, the Columbia Concert Band will perform their spring concert featuring Mr. Houlik as soloist.

James Houlik is a product of Czech ancestry, but hails from Long Island, New York.  He is the only tenor saxophonist to have performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the White House.  He has literally traveled the globe, performing in over forty different countries and with nearly one hundred orchestras, including London, Prague, Berlin, Chicago and New York.  Mr. Houlik’s pioneering efforts have resulted in the composition of over seventy new pieces for the tenor sax, and his world-wide achievements as soloist and clinician have been recognized by audiences and critics, marking him as one of the outstanding saxophonists of our time.

The Columbia Concert Band is a non-profit community band that has been performing for local communities since 1983.  The band's purpose is to give non-professional musicians the opportunity to perform challenging band literature while entertaining the public in the Baltimore and Washington regional areas.  The band is affiliated with Howard Community College, which gives credit to students for band participation.
